Fraudster Satyam brothers get VIP status in Jail
The disgraced Satyam Boss B Ramalinga Raju and his brother have been living as ordinary prisoners in the jail after being found guilty of the biggest corporate fraud in Indian business history. Satyam had been showing cooked accounts for the last many years thereby showing huge sums of money in their accounts whereas the reality was far lower. This came to light after the self confession by B. Ramalinga Raju the ex CEO of Satyam.
Satyam since had been living in jail like normal inmates, sleeping on cold matress on the ground and using the common toilets and eating the same food as the others. But now they have been granted special class prisoner status on Friday, the brothers will now get cots, pillows, mattresses, sheets, mosquito nets, a separate kitchen and toilet, jail sources said.
A lower court gave this judgment on friday after certification by the district magistrate of the high lifestyles the brothers were used to. Ramalinga Raju is the owner of palatial bunglows in more than 60 cities around the world having hundreds of pairs of high end shoes, suits and other luxury items. But now he will be disallowed the use of telephone in the jail although he can ask for a color TV and can eat what ever his family brings.
This really shows the sorry state of affairs in Indian jails. All public should be treated as equals irrespective of the crime committed and social status possessed by the criminal. But those who are at the higher end of the ladder can ask for and get anything they want.
